Mexico's Drug War Moves North
photo

Ninety percent of the cocaine in the U.S. comes in through Mexico, most of our imported marijuana, and tons of methamphetamines. That flow has created giant drug cartels and a drug war in Mexico: murders, kidnappings, beheadings, police station shoot-ups.

Now, that drug war is coming across the border, too — into Texas and Arizona. And the U.S. and Mexico are preparing to announce a massive crackdown.

“Plan Mexico” is the shorthand. But the story is complex, politically loaded, and dangerous.

This hour On Point: Mexico’s drug war rolls north, and the pushback is coming.

Guests:

Alfredo Corchado, Mexico bureau chief, Dallas Morning News

Maureen Meyer, Associate for Mexico and Central America, Washington Office on Latin America

Sergio Aguayo Quezada, professor of security studies and human rights, El Collegio de Mexico

Anthony Coulson, assistant special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Arizona.
